Biography — Jamal Kheiry

Professional background

Jamal Kheiry, owner of Clarity Strategic Communications, is a communications professional with an MA in journalism and more than 13 years of experience in his field — seven years in domestic and international public relations and six years as a reporter and editor at community newspapers.

Jamal began his professional communications career at Indiana University, where he edited news part-time for a National Public Radio affiliate while earning his Master’s degree (1995). He worked for five years as a reporter and managing editor for a weekly community newspaper in Indiana, and spent one year as managing editor of a weekly newspaper in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, a two-island country in the Caribbean.

Moving from journalism to public relations in 2001, Jamal accepted a corporate communications job in the Middle East, where he spent six years in the public relations department of the world’s largest energy company. While based in the Middle East, Jamal specialized in international media relations and crisis communications. He maintained relationships with dozens of journalists from around the world, and had the opportunity to conduct public relations and media relations activities in the U.S., Japan, South Korea, China, and several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Dubai (United Arab Emirates), and Oman.

Professional affiliations and community involvement

Jamal is a member of the International Association of Business Communicators, a worldwide professional organization dedicated to maintaining the highest professional standards and ethics in business communications.

As a member of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, Jamal worked with the Chamber’s management to conduct a webinar in May, 2008 for other Chamber members. The webinar, entitled “Tapping the Oil Rich Markets: International Opportunities for Vermont’s Green Businesses,” focused on the nascent environmental movement in the Middle East, primarily in the oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, where skyrocketing domestic energy demands are tilting the playing field in favor of sustainable energy investments.

He presented another webinar through the Chamber on September 16, 2008, focusing on public relations strategy and planning, and has organized a PR strategy workshop with the Vermont Small Business Development Center.

Jamal is a member of the Bethel Area Rotary Club, an affiliate of Rotary International. He took over as head of the local club’s public relations committee in July, 2008.

As secretary for the Bethel Business Association, Jamal participates actively in the organization’s initiatives as it seeks to foster a vibrant business environment in the central Vermont town.

Jamal is a member of the School Board for Bethel Schools (Bethel Elementary and Whitcomb High School).

Personal

Jamal lives in Bethel, Vermont with his wife and three children, along with two cats, two horses and more than 50 chickens.
